Discount Dapper Tip of the Day: Steam don’t iron

Because nothing says “put together” like wrinkle-free clothes without the risk of turning your favorite shirt into a crispy origami disaster.

Summer felt like the perfect time to bring this up—many of you will be heading to weddings, wearing the many linen shirts I've sent you, and not wanting to wrestle with the 57-step ritual of folding a shirt over an ironing board. No thanks.

I’ll admit, there are rare situations where ironing might edge out steaming. But for 95% of cases, a steamer will handle your wrinkles, save you time, and spare you from mastering a Rubik’s Cube–level shirt technique. I’ve been using [this portable steamer] and it works great—plus, here are two pro tips to make it even easier:

1. Steam sneak attack:
Hang your shirt just outside the shower while you get ready. The hot water might soften the wrinkles before you even plug in the steamer—or at least get you halfway there.

2. Inside job:
Steam from the inside of the garment out. This helps the steam move cleanly through one layer of fabric and gives you a visual cue that you’re actually smoothing things out, not just waving hot air around. See the below picture to see what I’m talking about.
